Edit1 Insight Basic Concepts
Before you begin editing or designing Insight dashboards it is helpful to have a basic understanding of how Insight organizes dashboards and the different web parts that the dashboard reports and graphs are composed of. Once you have reviewed this section you should have a basic understanding of the steps involved in creating your own Insight dashboards.
Edit2 The Insight Homepage and Dashboard Pages
Insight is a web site which can host and unlimited number of individual dashboards. When a user logs on to insight the default view is the Insight homepage. The Insight homepage displays all of the dashboards the user has privileges to view. Each dashboard is typically represented on the Insight homepage using a title, description, and an image specified when the dashboard is created.
As described later in this guide, the Insight homepage is like a canvas on which the dashboard administrator can arrange the dashboards in an arrangement intuitive to its users. Dashboards can also be configured with connectors which allow the Insight homepage to suggest relationships between different dashboards on the home page.
When a user clicks on a dashboard that dashboard page will load and display the information that it has been configured for. Users can use the Home button to navigate between the homepage and individual dashboards.
Edit3 Web Parts
Each dashboard is composed of web parts located in different zones on the dashboard page. There are several different types of web parts that display information in formats such as charts, gauges, and tabular reports. The process of building a dashboard involves selecting the web parts appropriate to each type of information you want to display, placing the parts on the dashboard, configuring the part’s options, and, optionally, adding connections between parts to support drill down reports.
Edit4 View and Modify Modes
When you log on to Insight as a user with privileges to modify the Insight homepage or an individual dashboard, the tool bar at the top of the page will include a Modify button which allows you to enter a mode in which you can edit the current view. When you click the button Insight will display a series of buttons for edit and design options that are appropriate for the view you are in. If you click Modify while viewing the Insight homepage you will be provided with option for editing the homepage view. If you click the Modify button when viewing an individual dashboard Insight will display options for editing the dashboard and its parts. Users without modify privileges are provided with a simplified toolbar for refreshing the current page and returning to the dashboard home page.
Edit5 Shared Scope and User Scope
Insight also provides two levels of dashboard modification privileges which can be granted by the administrator – shared scope and user scope. Modifying the shared scope changes the common view of a dashboard visible to all users. Modifying user scope changes a dashboard only for the user making the modifications. Making changes to user scope allows users to create personalized versions of dashboards which are only visible to them. When viewing a dashboard, users with modification privileges will have Modify Shared Scope and Modify User Scope buttons on their toolbar based on the privileges granted by the administrator.
